Maternity Shoots
As a single mom, I found it so difficult to embrace all the changes and what my body looked like. It is such a different experience when there is no one there to encourage you to embrace the changes (well, I think anyway. I will report back next time around). It is hard to not just put on baggy clothes and pretend like your body isn't changing.
As someone who doesn't even wear low-cut shirts, trust me and get naked for it. I am so thankful to have found Jay Coy (@momentsbyjaycoy), an amazing human and an amazing photographer. He has a team that consists of his lovely wife, Erika, and creative hair/makeup artist Liz (@lizadorable). These three are the perfect cocktail for the most wonderful day—a life-changing one at that.
The process of getting in with Jay was pretty simple. I found his website through his IG bio. He got back to me timely, and we set up a day to talk over Zoom (also offers in-person) to explain the process, pricing, dates, mood boards, etc. After that is a waiting game until your special day! It will come sooner than you anticipate, you'll show up with a bare face and be transformed into someone who will make you do a little dance when you see her (because damn, shawty). Once you're all ready, the shoot moves at your pace and how comfortable you are. You'll leave with the sweetest gifts, and then begins the second longest wait—you know, aside from your growing child, and stalk Jay's Instagram for sneak peeks (not that any of us do that).
Although I understand what I was able to do is not accessible for everyone, I chose to spend money on mine; you don't NEED to. You could do a shoot with someone (friend, family, anyone) or even a timer camera. Forever wishing I took more advantage of the timer camera, as I have about 4 photos of me pregnant excluding this shoot. Please encourage your expecting friends to take pictures! Another great option for editing is to join a Facebook group where people will edit photos for free. Of the few photo memories I have of my pregnancy, I hold these closest to my heart. They are everything I am and perfectly encapsulated me.
If someone ever remembers to invite me to their baby shower, this would be my gift (if someone you know is having a baby, this would make a great group gift... hint hint). You'd provide them the most unforgettable day and something they would cherish forever. Everyone deserves a day to feel beautiful, carefree, and confident. Whether you use a timer/friend or had professional photos taken, take a moment to go back and reflect on that day and remember how you felt when you broke past the insecurities. One of the best days of my life, and I am eternally grateful for Jay and his team for being a part of it.
